In short
- The Shine stick uploads data every few minutes; the app shows what the server received, not what the inverter does now.
- Local reading over RS485 Modbus gives values every few seconds, on your own network, with or without internet.
- Both can run side by side: the stick keeps feeding ShinePhone, the local monitor feeds your screen and Home Assistant.
Most Growatt hybrids are monitored the same way: a ShineWiFi or ShineLAN stick plugged into the inverter sends its data to Growatt’s servers, and you look at it in ShinePhone or on the web portal. It is free and it works. It is also slow, and it depends on two things you do not control.
Where the delay comes from
The stick does not stream. It collects values and uploads them at intervals of several minutes. The server stores them, and the app displays the last batch it received. So the power flow you see on your phone is a snapshot from a few minutes ago. For a monthly overview that is fine. For deciding whether to start the dishwasher now, while the sun is out, it is not.
Home Assistant’s Growatt integration has the same limit, because it reads the same servers.
When the internet or the servers are down
If your router drops, if the stick loses Wi-Fi, or if the Growatt servers have a bad day, the app shows nothing new. The inverter keeps running perfectly; you simply cannot see it. People with a battery tend to notice this during a grid outage, exactly when they would most like to know the state of charge.
Reading the inverter locally
Growatt hybrids have an RS485 link that speaks Modbus. Through it, a device on site can ask the inverter for its registers directly: PV strings, battery state of charge and power, grid import and export, load, priority mode and the energy counters of the day. No server in between, no upload interval. The values are as fresh as you want them, within a few seconds.
| Shine stick + ShinePhone | Local RS485 Modbus | |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh | Several minutes | A few seconds |
| Without internet | Nothing new | Keeps working |
| Home Assistant | Through the cloud | Direct, over MQTT |
| History | On Growatt’s portal | On your network, and in your own Cloud if you want it |
Keeping both
You do not have to choose. The stick sits on its own port; the local monitor uses the RS485 link. ShinePhone keeps working for your installer and for the long-term overview, and the local data drives your screen, your automations and your alerts.
Growatt Monitor is built for that second role. It reads the inverter over RS485 every few seconds, shows the four flows on its own screen and on a dashboard on your Wi-Fi, publishes to Home Assistant, and only reads: priority mode, time slots and battery settings stay exactly as they are.
Common questions
Do I need to unplug the Shine stick?
No. The stick and the box use different ports and do not disturb each other.
Will my installer still see the system?
Yes, on the Growatt portal as before. If you want, they can also be given access to the Cloud of the box with its access key.
Does local reading need any setting on the inverter?
Usually only the Modbus address, which is 1 unless someone changed it. We prepare the box for your model before shipping.
