Q: Does it need Ethernet?

No. The box connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. The RJ45 socket is for the cable to your equipment, not for a network.

Q: Can it run on a power bank or a 12 V system?

Yes, with any USB-C source: a power bank, a car-style 12 V to USB adapter or a phone charger. It draws under 0.5 W.

Q: How far can the box be from the Wi-Fi router?

As far as a phone still gets a good 2.4 GHz signal. If the spot is weak, a simple Wi-Fi repeater does the job.

Q: Does it get firmware updates?

Yes. A new version installs from the box’s Update page in a few clicks, and your settings are kept.

Small enough to sit next to the equipment, on a shelf or against the wall.

A Growatt hybrid already reports to Growatt’s servers through its Shine stick. The box does something different: it reads the inverter locally, over its RS485 Modbus link, every few seconds instead of every few minutes, and it keeps working when the internet or the servers do not.

It reads solar, battery, grid and load, the daily energy totals and the priority mode. The Shine stick can stay in place; they use different ports and do not disturb each other.
